You knew it was coming….
I believe most of us can/will agree that racism is stupid and that it takes power to exercise racism. Meaning, a person can have all the racial prejudice against a certain group of people in their hearts and minds they want to, but when they have the power/authority to act on those beliefs it's racism.
That said let's look at how the powerful stoopid media we have took a statement made by President Obama at a press conference and turned into a weapon of mass distraction from the real issues facing ALL American people regardless of race, class, sex or gender, and added fuel to the fire of the simmering racial tensions in America.
For some reason, Lynn Sweet of the Chicago Sun Times asked President Obama's opinion(key word) about the arrest of Dr. Henry Louis Gates during the President's press conference on Healthcare Reform. President Obama said (h/t mooncat);
Race relations, Skip Gates
Obama: Gates forgot his keys, jimmied his way into the house, burglary report. So far, so good. (Nice joke about White House, getting shot)
Prof. Gates was in house, officer comes in, Gates showed id, was arrested for disorderly conduct. Charges later dropped. I don't know what role race played in it. Any of us would be angry. Cambridge police acted stupidly. There is a long history in this country of AA and Latinos being stopped disproportionately.
That is a sign of how race remains a factor in this society. I am testimony to the progress that has been made. This still haunts us. It casts suspicion, even when there is good cause. Need to improve police techniques.
There are some that want to argue the arrest of Dr. Gates was not racist or racial profiling. I disagree and here is why.
Dr. Gates was arrested because he was boy who didn't watch how he talked to white people.
The data speaks for itself.
Racism is not “what you said”, it's “what you did”. Remember?
Now can we have an open and honest dialogue about this issue?
