My name is Caleb Burnett, and I am asking you to please vote for me in Alabama’s sixth congressional district (CD-06) as a pledged delegate to Senator Bernie Sanders. I am 19 years old and this is my first time voting in a presidential primary. Throughout high school and college, I have been involved in a number of community service groups, political clubs, and political campaigns.
Most recently, I have been trained as a campus corp leader for the Bernie 2020 campaign, and currently serve as the Co-Chair of the Young Democratic Socialist of America at UAB. For me, the choice is clear. When we democrats gather in Milwaukee we must nominate Senator Sanders to be the Democratic nominee in order to beat President Trump and to empower a working-class movement that will transform this country.
As a young person, this election is crucial in so many ways. Wages stay stagnant, income inequality continues to grow, gun violence continues to plague our streets and the imminent threat of climate change creeps closer and closer every day. These are huge tasks put before us that, if we do not address, will cause irreparable damage.
My generation has not had the privilege of growing up in an America where we could separate our lives from these horrifying political issues we see on the news. Since before we could even read we witnessed the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as the total collapse of the global economy in 2008. This so-called “moderate neoliberalism” has sold out an entire generation in order to maintain a false sense of normalcy that has only allowed these issues to fester and grow. The political establishment has dis-empowered the working-class people of America.
For these reasons, we must be bold. We must think big and fight hard. We have to take risks and act with political courage if we are to win in the fight for truth, justice, and radical democracy. For these reasons, I support Senator Bernie Sanders.
Senator Sanders has consistently advocated for policies like Medicare for All, College for All, and an end to corporate greed. He has always stood on the side of the working-class and has always fought to protect and strengthen unions. He has bucked the foreign policy establishment for decades and fought to put an end to endless war. He understood the urgency of the climate crises in the 1980s and has put forth the most ambitious climate policies in his Green New Deal proposal.
However, despite these immensely ambitious proposals, the most important part of the Sanders campaign is the slogan “Not Me. Us”. In this, Bernie’s political mission is laid out clearly. He realizes that in order to recenter and revolutionize our politics, it isn’t enough to just elect him president, but working-class people must carry on and continue to organize even after the election. We must see a President Sanders, not as an end within itself, but a means to an end that will serve as a catalyst to a larger political movement to bring about revolutionary change.
On March 3rd, please vote for Senator Bernie Sanders for the Democratic nomination as well as Caleb Burnett as your delegate in the sixth congressional district of Alabama. Then, lets beat Donald Trump and let’s transform this country. Solidarity Forever!
