I am Robert F. Smith of Florence, Alabama and I am a Pete Buttigieg delegate for the 5th Congressional District of Alabama. (Northern Alabama–Madison, Limestone, Morgan, Lauderdale and parts of Jackson counties). I have practiced law in Northwest Alabama for 35 years and counting. My husband (Michael Hasty) and I support Shoals Pride, Shoals Diversity Center, HRC, ACLU, UNA Diversity, First Presbyterian Church and any other opportunity to promote equality and diversity.
Pete Buttigieg has a great group of supporters in Alabama and I am proud to be included on the statewide “Alabama For Pete” committee. We are a diverse group and represent all congressional districts. Pete’s campaign is based upon unifying like-minded people to win back the presidency and save our country from the radical right. Election night polling of actual voting shows that Pete ranks first or second in all demographic categories. This proves he is electable and the right person to bring our country together to regain the presidency and both houses of congress.
I am a lifelong Democrat who was active 30 years ago but dropped out of involvement until the Doug Jones vs Roy Moore campaign. My husband and I joined the Doug Jones campaign and hosted organizational parties at our law office every Wednesday night for like-minded democrats to join together and elect Doug Jones. We feel that our efforts helped elect Doug Jones because we carried the City of Florence, Alabama.
I first heard of Pete Buttigieg last year as I was looking for the best candidate to defeat “Thump” (sorry that’s what I call him). To be honest Pete being gay really drew my attention. I thought what courage it took for a LGBTQ person to run for president. I personally know what it means as I am a gay lawyer in a small Alabama town. Pete is the first openly gay person to run for President of the United States. This made me look deeper into Pete’s background and position statements. I knew he would come under attack and that his campaign would be marginalized by the establishment. I hoped people would judge him on the “Content of his Character” and not the sexual orientation God gave him. If they did, then he would have a fair chance. Pete having been elected mayor of a city spoke to me as hope that middle America is becoming more accepting.
Now, watching Pete successfully compete at the highest level for President by winning the Iowa Caucuses and almost winning the New Hampshire Primary gives me further hope that America is changing.
Pete’s education and background are impressive. Pete is a graduate of Harvard College and Oxford University (attending on a Rhodes Scholarship). Pete is a veteran. Pete has served two terms as a mayor.
Pete’s website PeteForAmerica.com contains all his position statements of issues that are important to our country at the important crossroads.

I ask that if you are a Pete supporter and live in the 5th Congressional District of Alabama that you vote for Pete on March 3, 2020. Also, your vote for me as a delegate pledged to Pete Buttigieg would be greatly appreciated.
Are you running as a delegate for a Democratic candidate or as a Democratic Uncommitted delegate? Share your story with the Left in Alabama community and ask for votes. Too often, people just see a list of delegate candidates and randomly select a few names. But these delegates represent YOU at the convention! They vote on the platform and they vote for the nominee. Give them a reason to vote for you!
Visit our post “Are You Running for a DNC Delegate Spot in 2020? Let us Help!” to learn how to submit your story and the rules/guidelines. We’ll share all articles on our social media and you can use them to promote your candidacy.
