On Friday President Trump and Congressional Republicans were dealt a major defeat with the failure to pass their “repeal and replacement” of the Affordable Healthcare Act (Obamacare). Congressman Robert Aderholt (AL- 4) was a clear supporter of the measure. Congressman Aderholt illustrated his disappointment in a press release. In the release the Congressman states,
“There is a lot of disappointment with the healthcare bill being pulled from the House floor for a vote. I was planning to vote ‘yes’ today to repeal Obamacare, however the entrenched power of ‘no’ has continued gridlock in Washington.”
Republicans had seven years to create a replacement for Obamacare. However, it turned out to be seven years of smoke and mirrors. Congressman Aderholt was ready to wave his magic wand over the good people in his district.
The Republican Healthcare Bill was classic Republican ideology. The original bill would have given kicked 24 million people off of Medicaid by given a massive tax cut to the wealthiest individuals. The bill would have given the wealthiest 2% a $274 billion tax break over 10 years. This is very interesting since the average median income for Alabama’s 4th Congressional District is around $31,000 a year. There are a lot of people in this district that relies on Medicaid. Also the changes Medicaid would have greatly exacerbate Alabama’s budget issues. The state has not been at the required matching fund rate (50%) for the last few years. The GOP health care bill would have required states to either pay more or be subject to a block grant set to given amount. However, these factors did not affect the Congressman.
Once again, Congressman Aderholt showed that he is the Reverse Robin Hood. He was willing to vote on a bill that would have robbed the poor to give to the rich. The members of Congressman Aderholt’s district deserves better.
