Attorney General Troy King Well Compensated

by: mooncat

Mon Jul 14, 2008 at 11:29:17 AM CDT

Considering Troy King's current notoriety, it's pretty rich that his salary is the second highest in the nation for a state Attorney General.  From Legal Newsline:

It is somewhat bewildering to see Alabama among the top 10, one analyst told LNL.

Alabama Attorney General Troy King is paid the second highest salary in the nation in a state where lawyers earn an average annual salary of $108,730. With a cost of living adjustment, King's salary would be to $209,664.7 in California's capitol, Sacramento.

"I'm a little surprised Alabama's at the top just because one doesn't associate high salaries with the more rural Southern states," said Michael Shires, a public policy expert with Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif.

"But," he added, "it's not a smoking gun kind of surprise. It's just: Oh, that's interesting."

Maybe we're paying Troy extra for the added entertainment value he brings to the office.  Or maybe it's for his controversial actions as Attorney General.  Hat tip to Dan for keeping track of Troy's shenanigans all in one place -- that's getting to be a mighty long list.

King's "toe" again (4.00 / 1)

According to Danny at,  Troy King was going to give a press conference today IF The Birmingham News printed an article about the allegations in the Sunday paper.  The article didn't run so the conference was called off.  Check out this comment from Doc's:

  1. Tobie - I think you are wrong. The AG withstood the very best shot from his detractors. An entire week of such vicious allegations would test anyone’s resolve. I think he emerges a stronger Attorney General — he and the Birmingham News went toe-to-toe and the Birmingham News blinked. Not too many politicans can claim that victory.

Oh, so it's a victory when politicians can make the news media "blink"?  A victory for whom?

Birmingham News? (0.00 / 0)

They're working on the King story, too?  I hadn't heard that.  Sounds like every newspaper in Alabama has a reporter or two following Troy King these days.

Where the heck is King, anyway?  Has he made any public appearances in the last few days?

Let me see if I've got this straight(no pun intended) (4.00 / 1)

The official, unofficial reason Troy King and all the other Alabama co chairs were removed from the McSame website is because the site is undergoing a routine, planned maintence, right?

According to the poster at Doc's the Birmingham News was going to run a story in Sunday's edition but Troy' went toe to toe with them and made them blink".

The only appearance that was supposed to happen didn't happen because "Troy went toe to toe with the Birmingham News and they blinked".

In Hiding (4.00 / 1)
I've read on a couple sites that Troy was supposed to be in Point Clear for the DA convention this past weekend but was a no-show, that he was supposed to meet with drug company executives on Friday about the big litigation/judgement but sent his deputy instead. Word is still out on whether or not he was at church yesterday.

I don't believe the DAs expected him at Point Clear (0.00 / 0)
Honestly, there's no love lost there.  Maybe they invite him for form's sake, but none of the career prosecutors were surprised he didn't show up.  In fact, I heard some of them were following the story pretty closely.

This has to be one of the most interesting non-events in (4.00 / 1)

the history of Alabama politics.  There are clear indications that Riley's people were first pushing the rumor and when it reached a certain level, they pulled back and refused to talk to the press.  All and all, I think Troy King's political career is over.  He probably does not know it yet but the next time he starts asking for money to run a political campaign it will gradually sink in.  I think this was all about the Governer's race and who ever gets the blessing of the Riley establishment will be the big gainer from this rumor filled non-event.

As I reflect on this, I think the progressive blogs have been used to help keep the Alabama Governor's office in Republican hands.  We will see.

Troy's money drying up (0.00 / 0)

The influence of the internet, particularly of search engines like google, is not well understood in the political community --- YET!  Every time there is an election, even a little one, we see our search engine traffic spike as voters start searching for information on candidates.  Frankly, we can't see it today for the Republican runoff because it's lost in the Troy King balloon, but I'm sure there are voters out there right now googling Wayne Parker, Jay Love, Harri Anne Smith, Cheryl Baswell Guthrie and the rest.  What the search engine spits out will influence how they vote.

More Americans are becoming online-literate every year, so this is a growing phenomenon.

Now, what has this little dust-up done to Troy King's search results?  The last time I checked, 7 out of the first 20 items google returned for "Troy King" were unflattering and related to the gay sex rumor.  4 more were unflattering items about something else.  The rule of thumb is that a politician should own the entire first page of google results (10 for most people) and Troy has lost that.  Big donors are more likely to be internet savvy than the average voter, so they are even more sensitive to negative search engine results.

I suspect you're right about the money.  Donors who check Troy King out will find a lot of rumors they don't like, with no denials or attempt at pushback from Troy King.  He's made John Kerry's mistake of waiting too long to say anything, whether the rumors are true or not.  For the record, I think there must be some truth to it.  There's just too many sources for this to be made up out of whole cloth.

Nice try drg (0.00 / 0)

IF, and that is a big IF,  the the Alabama Governor's office remains in "Republican Hands" it won't be  because of "progressive blogs".  As a matter of fact I don't see the Governor's office "remaining in Republican hands" because Alabama voters have seen where the Governor's office being in "Republican hands" has gotten us.

BTW, what are the "clear indications that Riley's people were first pusing the rumor" and what makes you think that "Riley's blessing" means anything?
