Happy Birthday Left in Alabama!

We're One Year Old!

We made it!  Actually, yesterday was the Big Day, but we were too busy to do anything special so here's a belated celebration thread today.  Sometimes you have to roll with it.

Herding Old Cats made the first post April 23, 2007 on How to Get Alabamians to Come to Progressive Events?  That's still a great question.

The latest post is number 1627 about Helen Thomas and happens to be Lindy's third diary ever in spite of being person number 34.  Yay Lindy!  We're up to 395 registered users now with the most recent addition being Fella who is still keeping quiet.  Don't worry, it took Lindy almost a year but the wait was worth it.

In the past year we've had 152 posts related to Don Siegelman, over 200 on Iraq and dozens on FISA, SCHIP, the Alabama Legislature, ADEM, the presidential primaries and everything in between.  Pat yourselves on the back, diarists!

Since last April 23rd, Left in Alabama has had 104,347 unique visitors and 199,783 page loads per Statcounter.  Our Technorati authority has gone from 0 to 172 and our rank from 460 something thousandth to a more respectable 42,948th.  Yeah, those are pretty geeky benchmarks but it's what we have.

Before we started Left in Alabama we hoped that "if we build it, they will come" and you have.  You came, you read, you commented, you diaried and you participated in the progressive conversation in Alabama.  You are growing the progressive community in this state and influencing the media narrative so that progressive views occasionally make it to the front page and the opinion page now.  Bless you every one, and please don't stop now.

If you don't have a username, why not establish one so you can leave a comment now and then or even post a diary of your own?  Almost every bonnet has a bee under it and we need your help to feed this blog to keep it growing!

Happy Birthday to LiA and a great big purple Thank You to each and every one of YOU!

Yay!!! (4.00 / 1)

I had no clue when I set up my account I'd be posting here less than a year later. It never even occurred to me at the time to check and see if I had a diary. I'm glad I decided to join in.

Those are some geeky benchmarks, but, you don't measure the success of your blog with the benchmarks you want; you measure it with the benchmarks you've got.

I think we can call this amount of progress in only a year success! 200 posts on Iraq in 365 days seems like quite a respectable frequency.

Happy birthday, LiA. Here's to another good year.

It's more fun if you comment!

I left out Teh funny part and the synchronicity (4.00 / 1)

I did not realize LiA was less than a month old when I discovered it!

Here is the first link from my blog to LiA, at least according to my search widget. Strangely enough, it is dated May 23, one month to the day after Herding Old Cats' first post.

It's more fun if you comment!

I remember when you first showed up (4.00 / 1)
It was not too long after John Leek and the Cotton Mouth folks found us.  The bustling Mississippi left blogosphere caught me by surprise.

shot of tequila (4.00 / 2)
My last shot of tequila led to my shaving my head and trying to crash the Mardi Gras as Yul Brynner.  Think I'll pass.  But a nice crisp Chardonnay?  Oh, sorry , I'm being elitist. I love this site!

Hello, Redeye (4.00 / 2)
My name is Norm and I am also addicted to LIA.  We all understand your addiction, it's the rush, it's the feeling of power (it's been missing awhile), it's the warmth spreading throughout my body and out into my relationships and my world, it's the sky-high high with never a hangover.  Yes, together we can work on this addiction.  Work to make it greater, larger, to spread it throughout this lovely land of ours, extend it into Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi, maybe someday even (dare we think it? ) Florida. Time for another hit!!!!!!

Happy Birthday (4.00 / 2)

And to you Mooncat, I endorse the sentiments already expressed.  Thank you so much for giving us this forum, a chance to be heard, to speak to friends about our thoughts and feelings, occasionally to gently persuade those who do not share our values.  LIA will always be my home blog.  Like many others, I used to spend many hours on the big national blog (you know the one), but found it too strident, too well - downright rude.  Maybe it's that famous Southern courtesy, but I always feel comfortable even when disagreeing with or being corrected by another blogger.

SIA is peopled by those who are quietly erudite, those who are insistently (but loveably) dogmatic, and a healthy sprinkling of those who are very cleverly witty.  And you, Mooncat, reflect all these, as your namesake, the moon, reflects the light of the sun. But, like your other namesake, the cat, you personify dignity, playfulness and independence.  Thank you for being you - and thank you for Left in Alabama!!!

Happy Birthday! (4.00 / 2)

Though I'm relatively new to the blog, I'd just like to wish y'all a happy birthday and say thank you for what you're doing. With me being a conservative Democrat, there are issues that we simply do not agree on, however, in my opinion, this site has shown to be a welcoming site to all wings of our party! There are some sites on the web that simply pit the liberal and conservative wings against one another, but this blog is similiar to that of my homestate, Tondee's Tavern, in that it acts as a unifer for Democrats.

As a Georgian who recently became interested in AL politics, this is my "go-to site" for AL political news. Keep up the great work! The news coverage you guys provide is amazing.

Thanks,

RD

I still do not understand how that post was the first one. (4.00 / 1)

The blog was established, so far as I remember.  I am certain that people were live blogging the 2007 Madison County Democratic Reunion.  I am sure that Ron Sparks was involved.   After the event was over, I was hauling tables around, so I did not keep up with where the canopy went, etc.

"Every bonnet has a bee under it" Ain't it the truth MoonCat!!

Here's to bees, bonnets, and the combintion thereof!

That was on DailyKos last year.  I think we'll do it again, but maybe here instead of DKos, or maybe both?  Anyway, LiA wasn't in existance for the 2007 Dem Reunion, but it was in the works.
