I need your help. Am I overreacting?

If you are in Cullman County you would have received a couple of campaign flyers in the mail in the last couple of days.  We in Cullman County will be voting on our replacement in the House.  This  is an office vacated by Neal Morrison (D) a few months ago by decree of Bob Riley and his appointed Chancellor.  Enough of the background lets get into the meat of the story.

I retrieved the mail as always and noticed that I had two campaign flyers.  One was from James Fields.  Mr. Fields is the Democratic candidate for the House Seat.  His flyer was a typical "I care about jobs, children and the community and I won't vote to raise taxes on working families, etc..."  It was the usual type of document touting his abilities and beliefs.  It made no mention of his Republican opponent.

Now don't get me wrong, Fields seems like a decent guy but I am not with him on his Pro-Life stance and as a Methodist minister he runs on about god and Jesus and all the other religious rubbish a bit too much.  He would not be my first choice.

I read over the second flyer which was distributed by the Alabama Republican Party on behalf of Wayne Willingham.  I was mildly amused.  It was colorful and had juxtaposed lists of what was good about Willingham and what was incarnate evil about his Methodist minister opponent.  I summarily trashed them both.

I continued on with my life by preparing dinner for my children when it suddenly dawned on me what was written on the Willingham flyer.  I dug through the trash and had another look.  The front was covered by a pack of hound dogs with the caption; "There are only certain dogs that can hunt..."   The back of the flyer starts off with, "And there is only one candidate to represent Cullman County."  Then further down the Willingham flyer in the comparison list of Willingham and Fields it mentions that Fields is a "Former State Employee"  and then again it states that, "[Fields was] Never elected.  Has held taxpayer funded positions in the public sector."

Now the kicker.  James Fields is an African-American and Wayne Willingham is as white as milk.  Do you see it?  Am I reading more into it than I should or did Wayne Willingham and the Alabama Republican Party just say that James Fields is lazy and lives on welfare?

I'll break it down a little for you.

"There are only certain dogs that can hunt..."  - Translation - Some dogs are just lazy black guys.

"And there is only one candidate to represent Cullman County."  - Translation -  Do you really want a lazy black guy representing Cullman County.

"Never elected.  Has held taxpayer funded positions in the public sector."  - Translation - Lazy black guy on welfare.

The only thing missing from this atrocity was a fried chicken or watermelon reference.  Should I be as upset as I am?  Mountain or molehill?  Please let me know before I write a letter to the editor.

Here is a picture of the front of the flyer and the back

Don't get offended... (4.00 / 2)

just help Fields get elected.  Willingham has openly admitted to being a member of the Southern Party and the League of the South, both which are Neo-Confederate hate groups that adovcate secession.  He knows exactly what message he is sending with those flyers.  Cullman County is a deeply socially conservative county, and Fields' beliefs are very much in line with those he hopes to represent, but he also respects the fact that others believe differently.  I can only imagine that you would rather have him in office than a racist tool like Willingham.

So write the letter to the editor and make sure you include those facts about Willingham.

Hear him, hear him! (4.00 / 1)

You aren't over-reacting.

You were astute to pick up on the messaging from the Willingham flyer.

I think that message ought to be pointed out in your LTE.  I don't know how well criticizing confederates will play out in Cullman County, I don't live there.

However, it might be helpful to focus on Willingham criticizing a Methodist minister.  There are a lot of Methodists about, and they have been criticized for years by Baptists, Church of Christ, Assembly of God, Church of God, Pentecostals, and so on; for the sin of thinking about what Bible verses mean.  In some areas, where there are no Episcopalians (aka Whiskypalians), Methodists have to serve as the cosmopolitan, sophisticated, apostate, boogey-men.

Methodists resent this.

This may not be the right avenue for jonwil, but I think there is fertile ground for liberals here.

its advertising (4.00 / 1)

i would say, from a purely advertising perspective, the saying  "that dog will hunt" does not have any racist overtones, so don't create them b/c you feel it helps your position.  In advertising, the point is to relate to your reader/consumer - Cullman County = Rural area, most likely with hunters.  the tag line referring to dogs/hunting was chosen most likely to identify with the hunters (not to mention it is saying that willingham is the "dog" that will hunt, not fields, so there goes your theory on calling fields the dog).  I'd also say that the corruption that has been exposed in the 2-year system is the reason for the inference to tax payer funded jobs.  It is sad to see you immediately pull the race card - that has been the problem with the democratic party lately, i.e. joe reed.

Finally, your racist views came through a little when you spoke of "fried chicken and watermelon", what does that have to do with anything?

I didn't think I was being racist. (4.00 / 1)
I said that if one or both of those racist stereotypes was added it would leave no doubt that it was a racists piece of Republican hackery.  There would be no need or use of a "race-card" if race were no longer an issue.

Voting for the lesser of two evils is still better than voting for the most evil.

you brought race in to it when you misinterpreted this direct mail piece.  but a "true" democrat can't acknowledge that they bring race in to situations, back to the original i.e. joe reed.

Cooper, welcome (4.00 / 1)
you were doing so good, why you didn't just stick with the subject. Who is this Joe Reed you keep bring up?

The point. (4.00 / 1)
I was asking my friends here if they thought it was racist.

"so don't create them b/c you feel it helps your position"

I don't know where that is coming from.  It doesn't help my position.  My position is the same.  Racism, even when shaded and hidden in code is wrong.

"but a "true" democrat can't acknowledge that they bring race in to situations, back to the original i.e. joe reed. "

Okay, can't find anything on Joe Reed so I can't say anything about that.  The difference here is that I brought up racism in the defense of a man.  I didn't try to use it to further a stereotype and I am not campaigning for Fields.  I said earlier that I was not in agreement with him on several factors.

You seem to be attacking me and "true Democrats" here for spotting and questioning the motives behind the flyer, but of 11 comments only 5 so far agree fully or in part that it was racist.  That is what the post and this forum is about - open discussion.

Jon, let cooper tell us who Joe Reed is. (4.00 / 1)
He keeps bringing him up.

open discussion (0.00 / 0)

i completely agree. it is an open discussion, and that is first and foremost. Joe Reed is vp of the AEA, supporter of Hillary and has said on record and on the air that a black man can not be president (although he is black).  One of the most racist individuals i have ever met or heard speak.

My point is that you, or anyone, can take a mailer like this and create a racial overtone over something that was not meant to be that way.  Everyone sitting on the sideline understands that this race is a white man vs a black man in cullman county.  That being said, all it takes is a spark or a voice or a misinterpretation to create a groundswell of untruths and rumors.

We are all educated and all have our "partisan glasses" on to a degree.  So i just do not like reading in to things without facts.  Unfortunately, these are the times that we live in, and it is very easy to lable someone or something as racist - it is not as easy to disprove such.

How the heck is Joe Reed the racist? (4.00 / 1)

Why the heck is Joe Reed's name even in this discussion?

Just because Joe Reed is the   VP of AEA  (Alabama Education Association)   and a Hillary Clinton  supporter that doesn't believe a black man can be elected President of the United States doesn't mean he's racist.

After this discussion I'm beginning to think Joe Reed might have a point....

Joe Reed (4.00 / 1)

That's right, I remember now.  Although I was not aware of his comments on Barack Obama I do remember some controversy in the contesting of Patricia Todd's win in the District 54 seat.

Although some of that may have been based on Todd's openly gay lifestyle.  Homophobia is a condition not restricted by race.

As for the reading in to things, if the flyer had been presented just like the one I got today from Willingham this would not be an issue.  Todays mailer had a nice pic of the Willingham family and a statement of values and things that Willingham will or will not do as a Rep.   Very good, no controversy.

I will concede that whoever designed it may never have given a thought to race and meant nothing offensive by it.  But with the history here a little more sensitivity should have been exercised.

One more note on Reed; I do not agree with him at all that Barack Obama can't be elected.  But I do know a couple of African-Americans that are avid Hillary Clinton supporters, not because they don't think that Obama can't be elected but because of experience and records.  I do think that it is a good sign for the country and the African-American community that even when an African-American is running they don't simply vote their race but choose a candidate that they feel is the best choice.

Not vacacted by decree of governor (3.50 / 2)
Neal Morrison's seat was not vacated by decree of the governor. Neal voluntarily resigned his seat in the Legislature in order to accept a job offer to be president of the community college.  Just like Senator Bradley Byrne resigned from the Legislature to accept his new job as chancellor.  If you are referring to the policies passed by the State Board of Education (not decreed by the governor) that would prohibit elected officials from employment in two-year colleges, that doesn't go into effect until after 2010.  Therefore, Neal's decision to give up his legislative seat was purely his choice.  It had nothing to do with the governor, the chancellor, the Board or anyone else.

Advertising? (3.00 / 2)

The pack of hunting dogs reminded me  the times of run away slaves being tracked down by a pack of blood hounds, and images of the  dogs being used to attack  the  protestors during the Civil Rights movement.

The front was covered by a pack of hound dogs with the caption; "There are only certain dogs that can hunt..."

Mountain or molehill (4.00 / 1)

I vote molehill.  Or at least small mountain.  The comment about taxpayer supported positions in the public sector would serve to disqualify every police officer, fireman, schoolteacher, correctional officer, garbage collector, meter reader...you get the idea.  If anything, it makes Willingham sound stupid.  His membership in certain organizations does nothing to change my mind about that either.

Put your energy into supporting Fields.  I also agree that Fields' views on abortion and various other faith-based issues are unfortunate, but to be expected given his position as a minister, and probably necessary if he is to have a chance to be elected.

A small group of thoughtful people could change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.
