When Republicans Mo Brooks and Martha Roby were running for Congress they couldn't say enough bad things about government funded health care, but their own government funded health care benefits went into effect today. Declining to put their money where their mouth is, these hypocrites are taking advantage of blue chip health coverage even as they try to repeal the Affordable Care Act for everyone else.
Beginning today, a new Republican Member of Congress with high blood pressure, diabetes, or any chronic condition is immediately covered at the same premium cost as 8 million other federal employees. The same is true for his or her spouse and dependent children, regardless of age, gender or prior illness.
That would not be the case for millions of Americans if the GOP health care repeal bill becomes law.
Compounding this hypocrisy, Martha Roby and Mo Brooks voted against a measure to make sure that repeal of health insurance reform would only move forward if a majority of Members of Congress gave up their own government health care. They voted to protect their own perks, but not their constituents' health care. And on the very day they were sworn in, these newly elected Republicans even voted to hide their own government funded health care from constituents. Obviously, promises to make government more transparent were just political hot air.
Brooks and Roby have settled into the Washington culture — in the worst possible way.
*At least 15 Republicans, keeping with the spirit of their congressional campaigns, are not taking their government health care while they fight to repeal health care for millions of Americans. No one from Alabama is on the list.
