Mike Rogers (R, AL03), referring to President Barack Obama:
“We survived Jimmy Carter … we can survive this ol' boy …”
Mike Rogers is a white man, born and raised in the Deep South and can't possibly claim ignorance of the fact that the term “boy” applied to a black man is a well established slur intended to belittle and demean. It's shameful, disrespectful and totally inappropriate to use that term for any black man, let alone the President.
To quote Al Sharpton, the President of the United States is “nobody's boy.”
Rogers' comment is not a dog-whistle to white supremacists, it's a bullhorn call. Rogers is an embarrassment to his district and to Alabama. The Opelika-Auburn News, which first reported the slur, has called on Rogers to apologize:
He doesn’t have to agree with, but as someone who represents all of the 3rd congressional district of , he needs to show a little respect. He needs to set a better example for our young people.
Further, let us remindthat when he refers to an adult black or mixed race male as “boy” he is playing with fire. That, as he well knows, is a loaded word that carries a lot of heavy racial baggage.
How low will the right go with their appeals to race in the next election? Almost certainly lower than any of us can imagine. Given Alabama's sordid racial history, it's apalling to see our Members of Congress stoop to using racial slurs against their political opponents.
