Alabama State Auditor Jim Zeigler & presidential candidate Robert Whitaker could almost be twin brothers. They have a lot in common: a tendency for self-aggrandizement, connections with white supremacists, nostalgia for the Old South, and distaste for abortion. Wow… if you throw James Henderson, Huntsville’s least favorite street preacher, into the mix perhaps they’re triplets.
Robert Whitaker’s on our radar because he’s currently running a particularly noxious robocall in Alabama. A horrified LIA reader alerted me to it last night, and we found an announcement about the robocall campaign on Whitaker’s Web site. We refuse to favor him with a link. Here’s the text of the call:
We robocall you at home because the media won’t carry our message.

Curious, I looked for info on Whitaker and immediately noticed parallels between him and Zeigler. Whitaker’s bio page credits him with, well, being in the vicinity when other people pulled off remarkable tasks:
Robert Whitaker was born in 1941. He entered the University of South Carolina at age sixteen and was a Political Science instructor at the age of nineteen. He then received a scholarship to study for a PhD in economics at the University of Virginia. Two of his eight graduate instructors there later won Nobel Prizes in Economics.
Hey, he saved the Hubble Telescopes! Who knew there was more than one? Hoping he didn’t inadvertently disclose classified info.
Robert worked on Capitol Hill from 1977 to 1982. During that period, two of his most personally gratifying accomplishments enjoyed today by all of us were saving the Hubble Telescopes and preventing the Internal Revenue Service from imposing racial quotas on private schools.
As the Southern Poverty Law Center put it:
A self-professed “genius,” Whitaker has a history in politics, though a dubious one. While he claims on his blog to have been the message man in the Reagan administration responsible for crushing communism, bringing down the Berlin Wall and saving the Hubble Space Telescope, Whitaker is closer to a hard-drinking grandfatherly Forest Gump. He once claimed to have an amphetamine habit that dropped his IQ to 100.
Drugs. They’ll get you every time.
At least Whitaker is honest enough to post his “accomplishments” on his own site (BobWhitaker.com) and give it a unique design and layout. As we noted last year, Alabama’s State Auditor Jim Zeigler has a fake Wikipedia page as his site! Zeigler’s bragging is worthy of Whitaker – and as hard to believe:
Zeigler devotes a whole paragraph to election triumphs in other states: Scott Walker’s recall win in Wisconsin and Republican control of the Washington State Senate.
In June 2012, Zeigler was recruited by Jenny Beth Martin’s Tea Party Patriots to go to Wisconsin to assist in fighting the recall of Republican Gov. Scott Walker. Democrat and liberal groups had initiated a recall vote. Zeigler stayed a month, working in Eau Claire and Wausau, WI. Walker was behind when Zeigler got there but turned it around to win by a modest margin. [28] After the success there, Tea Party Patriots asked Zeigler to go for a month to Washington State in October, 2012 in a long-shot attempt to switch control of the state senate to Republicans. On election night, Republicans fell two senate seats short of control and everyone assumed they had lost. But in January 2013 when the senate met to organize, two conservative Democrats switched, giving control to the GOP after all. [29]
See? All Zeigler had to do was travel to a state and turn the election around.
Whitaker and Zeigler also have more than a passing interest in abortion. Zeigler spent part of his campaign palling around with anti-choice picketers. In Huntsville, he wasted an entire morning picketing a clinic that was closed.
Meanwhile, Whitaker railed in 2006 that the “right” to abortion was a natural outcome of the “Right to Miscegenate.”
Both Whitaker and Henderson have an “uneasy” relationship with the Catholic Church. Whitaker thinks that the Church hierarchy made the Roe decision possible:
In 1967 the Supreme Court invented the right to miscegenate out of whole cloth. The Catholic Church heirarchy almost had a simultaneous hernia celebrating this decision.
[…]Everybody who marched for life had already agreed that the Supreme Court had a perfect right to invent a right to miscegenation.
When the same institution invented the right to abortion they went ape.
“Where did the Supreme get this power?
They got it from the Catholic Church and others who wanted the right to miscegenate to be enforced all over America, and who didn’t give a damn about constitutionality.
And Henderson invited this guy to be a featured speaker at Huntsville’s 2015 annual anti-choice rally. According to him, it might be better to be aborted than be raised a Catholic.
“As terrible as abortion is in every case,there are worse things that can happen to a person. Even Jesus said that it would have been better for Judas if he hadn’t been born. What is our goal for children after they’re spared an abortion? Do you want them to be brainwashed in public schools in the church of secular humanism? Do we want them to grow up to vote for leaders who take away our freedoms? To vote for IRS agents who will take money away from us to favor Socialism? Do we want them to be spared an abortion so they can be baptized in a worthless effort to wash away their sins and take part in a Mass which shamefully crucifies Christ over again or be saved by their own works?
Henderson, Whitaker, and Zeigler also love to hang out with the neo-Confederates….
- Zeigler recently made a speech to the racist “League of the South,” calling it nothing more serious” than a Sunday School picnic. Earlier, he became almost unhinged when he learned that George Wallace’s portrait had been moved.
- Whitaker regularly rants about the horrors of “white genocide:”
What if I said there was this RACE problem and this RACE problem would be solved only if hundreds of millions of non-blacks were brought into EVERY black country and ONLY into black countries?How long would it take anyone to realize I’m not talking about a RACE problem. I am talking about the final solution to the BLACK problem? - And Henderson waxes nostalgic about the Confederacy on his personal Facebook page.

CCat, that may well be, but the decision you followed up with was the Loving decision (more specifically, Loving v Virginia).

Hey BamaRainbow! That’s the decsion Whitaker bases his opinion on. His rant is about how Loving constitutes a “right to Miscegenate” and the Catholic church applauded it. Therefore, they set the stage for Roe.
Nobody said he was very smart, LOL!
I did a really dumb thing and followed the link provided which, by the way, didn’t actually take me to Whitaker’s comment itself and the page the link took me to didn’t have a single reference to “miscegenation.” I was forced to do a “Search” of the site to find the actual comment and its context. Granted the context is disgusting itself but it also makes a direct tie to how Whitaker connects Loving with Roe (and it still makes no sort of logical sense–I doubt even Alex Jones could figure out how Loving led to Roe, even indirectly).
BUT……
It would have been better to include a bit more of Whitaker’s lunacy; the fact he makes this insane suggestion being prompted by one of his “regulars” comments removes that reader’s right to being protected here. His piece was a response to some cretin named “Shari” who had apparently commented in some other entry he’d made about abortion and Roe. Here’s what precedes the quoted piece:

Again……the whole thing makes no sense, especially for someone who’s “concerned” about “white genocide.” You’d think such an individual would actively support abortion–for any reason whatsoever, especially for minorities (people of color). And I’d love to see where he thinks that the Catholic Church ever really held any specific stance on miscegenation (pro or anti).
