Is Somebody Named "Harvard" Running For Governor In 2010?

by: countrycat

Fri Jul 17, 2009 at 10:27:00 AM CDT

2nd UPDATEThe Davis campaign confimed that they did not commission this poll. The AL GOP says they're innocent as well, but can't speak for individual candidates. Waiting to hear on some other inquiries.

Only in Alabama would receiving a merit scholarship to Harvard University be a negative asset in a gubernatorial campaign.

Which Alabama candidate for governor is push polling message testing with a poll that harps on Harvard?

Yes!  I got polled last night and what an interesting "poll" it was.  First, it didn't come from any sort of political polling polling firm, but from this number - 712-941-2323 - that appears to be a market research firm in Iowa.  Second, many of the questions lacked a "neutral" or "don't know" option in the answers allowed, which made me question its legitimacy as an opinion poll.

But the biggest questions are these:  "Is someone planning to run against Harvard University instead of Artur Davis?" "If so, is it Ron Sparks or the GOP getting ready for the general?"

I'm not kidding about the Harvard part.  There were at least 5 questions, probably more, wanting my opinion of Harvard and its graduates. Then there were the questions of what I think about the Southern Poverty Law Center and ACLU.  I kept waiting to be asked if I thought a "pointy headed intellectual" or "outside agitator" could be elected in Alabama.

The questions I remember are below the fold.

countrycat :: Is Somebody Named "Harvard" Running For Governor In 2010?

Of course, there were the "normal" lead in questions about being registered to vote, likely to vote in 2010, education level, etc...

It began with a few head to head matchups and mentioned Bryne and James.  Then Davis and Sparks... who would you vote for if the primary were held today?

Then it got really interesting!  These aren't in any particular order; just the ones I remember....

Are Alabama voters ready to vote for Artur Davis?

The questioner wanted to make sure that I wasn't speaking for myself, but about Alabama voters in general.  uh huh

If you knew a candidate couldn't win in the general would you vote for him in the primary?

Think they could be any more subtle with that one?

What's your impression of the following organizations?

  • Harvard University
  • Southern Poverty Law Center
  • American Civil Liberties Union
  • Alabama Department of Agriculture

Would knowing this make you more or less likely to vote for a candidate?

  • Attended Harvard University
  • Worked for SPLC
  • Was a federal prosecutor
  • Served in Congress
  • Attended community college
  • Worked in a factory
  • Served as Agriculture Commissioner

Then, there was a question that took these characteristics in a narrative format and asked if I'd be more or less likely to vote for a candidate who'd attended community college, worked in a factory, etc.

So they were testing these individually and together.

Most important quality in a governor.

  • Upholding morals & traditional values
  • Taxes
  • Education
  • Immigration  (I think this was on the list)
  • Fighting terrorism and keeping the state safe

Ethics and transparency were not mentioned at all in the poll, and the pollster wouldn't let me add it.

What's UP with that last one?  Which candidate is considering giving the Alabama National Guard new and interesting work?

What's your impression of Bradley Bryne and Tim James?

They ended by asking for my name, which seemed odd. I've never had that before.  But the only personal identifying info I'd given them was my age, so I told him.

The whole subtext, in my opinion, was testing the message (or even spreading it) that "Artur Davis is an uppity black guy who went to Harvard and thinks he can sit in the Alabama Governor's Mansion."

I have my fingers crossed that this is NOT a Ron Sparks poll.  Perhaps it's Davis himself seeing how much traction that an opponent could get out of the argument.  Or maybe it's the GOP, who certainly won't let any slime go unslung in 2010.

Although at a time when the state is in such dire financial straights that Daddycat and I still haven't received our $%$# Alabama tax refund (it's a couple of thousand dollars!  And we still have to pay estimated taxes even though they owe us money!) and communities are considering teacher layoffs, and the PACT mess may keep kids out of college....  you get the idea here.

With all these problems, why would anyone think that Harvard University should be or might be a potent campaign issue?  Who's blowing that George Wallace-style dog whistle.  And why?

...did you spray the phone afterwards? :P

Lumping the Dept. of Agriculture in with the ACLU leads me to believe that it was indeed a GOP effort, but I wouldn't bet huge amounts on it

I received the same call (4.00 / 2)
and wondered who was paying for the poll. That were a lot of questions re gambling as well.

You too? (4.00 / 1)

So they're running this survey call (which countrycat told me lasted 15 or 20 minutes) statewide, to enough households that they caught not one but two of the folks who blog here.  Amazing.  And expensive, too.

Out of curiousity OP, are you a rural resident? Because I've heard suggestions that these general themes -- education backlash, uppity black guy, Harvard (is that close to New York City?), ACLU=meddlers -- will "play well in rural Alabama."  I don't buy that, but I can believe someone would poll rural Alabama looking for biases to exploit.  And a survey of rural residents would cost a lot less than a statewide survey.

did you vote (4.00 / 1)

in the Democratic primary?

If we knew whether the "poll" was restricted to Democrats or was run statewide, that would give some indication about who's sponsoring it.

btw.. I left out that they first called the house Tuesday night, but I was too tired from poll watching to spend time on the phone with them.  I told them to call back.  Which they did on Wednesday, but we weren't home.  Then, a THIRD call last night.  These guys were determined to get my input!

I did vote in the Democratic Primary (4.00 / 2)
but as I recall a couple of the questions went to which primary you normally vote in or are likely to vote in

Good data point (4.00 / 1)

and I do remember that.... Questions about how likely you are to vote, do you consider yourself a Democrat, Republican, etc. etc...

I'm just wondering where the list came from that they're using.  And if we knew that Republican primary voters were also getting called, then that would open up the possibilities for the sponsor.

Maybe whoever commissioned it will release the results, but I can't imagine why they'd admit to the "Harvard" questions, which are just so stupid.

When I hung up (4.00 / 2)

I figured it was either the Sparks or Davis campaigns for a coupla of reasons (1) it sounded like they were trying to weigh how effective certain issues were and (2) after each set of issues they would ask again who you would vote for in the Democratic primary if it was held today.

My other possible suspects are AEA or the Ala Demo Party, particularly that group that has been recruiting a 3rd candidate

Who indeed countrycat. (4.00 / 2)
I may be wrong, and I hope I'm not, but I think it's the republiKlans.  They are the only ones with enough moola to fund a poll like this.  But then again, it may be Artur Davis trying to gauge the reddest of the red state racism quota,  and he has the moola too.

My off the wall conclusion (4.00 / 2)
was that it was either Sparks or Davis. Relatively few questions went to ehe general election. From the wording of the questions I would lean towards Sparks campaign

Sparks or "friends" of Sparks are the obvious suspects (4.00 / 1)

Ron Sparks has to get past Davis in a primary so he has a clear and pressing interest in finding out whether a Harvard education, the SPLC and the ACLU are good lines of attack.

I really hope we aren't going to be treated to a ridiculous "he's too smart to be governor" campaign.  And any Democrat who tries to run against both smart black people and the ACLU will be excluding a significant part of the electorate for the Democratic primary.

I understand that Democrats in Alabama sometimes need to "run to the right" to win in the general election -- they routinely throw gay rights and women's rights under the bus already -- but if you're going to bash the black guy for having a good education and bash the ACLU and SPLC just because, well why not go whole hog and run as a Republican.

Good Lord.... (4.00 / 2)
Surely someone wouldn't even consider trying to use the fact that Davis went to Harvard against him???

Sadly, in Alabama, nothing would surprise me.  **sigh**

I know (4.00 / 2)
I know...lol...does the oppo really want to make it about "I'm dumber, therefore I'm the best guy for Alabama"?

Why are we surprised? I hear it all the time. (4.00 / 2)

Elect the dumb guy (4.00 / 1)

This is sad, but don't forget Alabama voted for George W. Bush not once, but twice.  He was the good ol' boy tea-totaller everyone wanted to "have a beer with."  His opponents were head and shoulders above him in intellect and common sense, but it didn't matter.  Ditto John McCain vs. Barack Obama -- the majority of our fellow citizens here voted to elect the dumb guy.

I'd put money on it (4.00 / 2)
I will be shocked if someone doesn't use the Harvard thing against Davis. That stuff works in this state. Don't forget, not only does it show he's an uppity guy who went to a yankee school, it also connects him to Obama.

Did anyone catch the name of the calling entity? (4.00 / 1)
I have had several calls from somebody caller- ID-ed as "FHT".  Could that be the same outfit?

our caller id (4.00 / 1)

showed this one as "RESEARCH"

maybe not the same entity...

Question for those polled (4.00 / 1)
Why didn't y'all ask who was responsible for the poll?  Maybe that's why I never get polled...

Maybe is one of those hard questions you can ask Davis and Sparks at DFA. :)

I did (4.00 / 1)

and the very nice lady doing the poll informed me that the poll (or survey as she called it) was set up so that the person doing the surveying would not know who it was being done for.

In other words, either she didn't know or she wasn't telling.

after more thought (4.00 / 1)

I'm still not sure...but I'm leaning more toward Sparks.  Sort of like the old question at a homicide - who benefits?

One thing to bear in mind though - GOP are past masters at picking (or trying to pick) who they run against. So, the question is which one would they rather run against?

If I were the GOP, I'd rather take on Sparks.

[ Parent ]
No surprise (4.00 / 1)
Unless Sparks denies paying for this poll, we should assume its Sparks. Does anyone else have more of a reason to test negatives on Davis and not others? We should also be bothered by it. it means that Sparks is not remotely interested in pushing Davis to be more progressive but that he is running the standard "he's not one of us" theme that is right out of the Wallace era. It means that Sparks is neither a progressive nor a new ideas candidate. Even his populist gambling message is probably more about getting Milt McGregor behind him than letting the people decide.
