Mitt Romney was completely flummoxed by President Obama's statement that businesses don't generally build the roads & bridges that help them produce & ship products. Before leaving on what appears to be the 2012 sequel to the movie National Lampoon's European Vacation, Romney released a misleading ad campaign & barnstormed the country blasting the President while standing in solidarity with businesses owners – who also didn't build their businesses in a vacuum. Rather most benefited from economic incentive grants, small business loans, etc. etc.
An incentive package approved by the City Council on Thursday calls for the city's Industrial Development Board to lease Toyota the rolling property — valued at $6.7 million — for a dollar per year.
In addition, the city will seek a $150,000 state site development grant and ask Huntsville Utilities to give Toyota an “investment initiative” credit worth $974,000.
Meanwhile, Madison County has promised a $250,000 economic development grant and $100,000 worth of site preparation work on Toyota's planned V6 engine production line.
The state has agreed to provide more than $6 million in incentives for Toyota's V6 engine expansion, including $1 million for capital costs incurred by the company in developing, constructing and equipping the facility, $400,000 for industrial access roads and $4.8 million for job training.
WHAT!?!? “$400,000 for industrial access roads?”
hmmmm…. roads, bridges, teachers, community investment, and partnership between government & business. A synergy that creates an environment where both employers and workers can thrive…. Seems like someone was just talking about that.
If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.
The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together. There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don’t do on our own. I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service. That would be a hard way to organize fighting fires.
There were reports in June that Romney would visit Huntsville in July, but perhaps those plans were put on hold. If the visit is rescheduled, I'm truly hoping that Gov. Romney visits the Toyota plant. I'm dying to hear him tell us about all the roads, bridges, and job training the company has paid for. All by its lonesome — and well, millions in taxpayer dollars……
Hey, for the Etch-A-Sketch candidate, anything is possible.
