Voters have a chance to elect a solid Democrat for District Attorney this year in Jefferson County. Charles Todd Henderson brings a unique set of qualifications to his candidacy: in addition to his Juris Doctor and 14 years experience as a practicing attorney, he holds a teaching certification from East Carolina and a Masters in Forensics from UAB. This is one DA whose evidence will stand up in court.
Mr. Henderson has real world experience enforcing the law, working as a police officer, DEA agent and Deputy Sheriff before obtaining his J.D. and going into private practice. Police are the investigative arm of the DA’s office; who could better lead the team than one who has himself been there on the street in the front line against crime?
A District Attorney represents the State, and too often voters elect young, ambitious attorneys with a “win at any cost” mentality. While this mindset no doubt produces great results for their personal scorecards and future careers, it can wind up being not so great for taxpayers caught up in the maw of the criminal justice system. For those without considerable wealth, it can become a nightmare from which they never emerge.
When asked what aspects of the justice system are most in need reform Mr. Henderson replied, “Mass incarceration of those with drug addictions and mental illness. Additionally I am not supportive of the death penalty nor incarcerating our children in adult jails and prisons.”
Since becoming an attorney Charles Henderson has used his qualifications for the betterment of his community, reaching out to Veterans and advocating for the poor via Project Homeless Connect. I believe he is a fine candidate for Jefferson County DA, a man who can be tough on crime but who also has the wisdom to discern a criminal from a victim of circumstance.
It’s not just about bringing cases – it’s about bringing the right cases. Charles Todd Henderson is the right man for the job.
