Alabama college students rallied in Montgomery yesterday to urge lawmakers to support a bill (sponsored by House Speaker Pro Tem Rep. Demetrius Newton, D-Birmingham) that would allow citizens to vote in favor of writing a new state constitution. If this bill passes, citizens would vote on whether to replace the consitution on Feb. 5th next year and, if approved, the new constitution could be but in place in 2010.
This can’t happen too soon. One of the students at the rally said that Alabama’s constitution seems to be at the root of all our problems. May be not all but certainly many of the problems that really hold our state back are rooted in the state constitution. Understandably, legislators are reluctant to change this document because it vests tremendous power in the Alabama Legislature.
Visit the Alabama Citizens for Constitutional Reform site (button at lower left) and then visit the Alabama Legislature site (button just below the first one) to find out how to contact your reresentative. Please call and urge him or her to support HB98. Alabama can’t afford to wait any longer!
SB99 is the Senate bill and is not out of committee yet, in case you want to call your Senator as well. Let’s make this happen this year.
